The Mocking of the Christ

The image of suffering Christ, seated on the cold stone slab and surrounded by the torturers who sneeringly mock him, was a beloved religious subject in the oeuvre of 16th-century Northern artists.
Jan Gossaert (1478 – 1532) one of the leading Netherlandish painters of this period, depicted the scene in a remarkably poignant manner, basing the dignified figure of Christ on Albrecht Dürer's prototype. His well-known rendering of the subject, which is currently on display at Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest, was so popular and widely replicated by Gossaert's contemporaries, that today around twenty copies of varying quality exist.
None of them, however, comes close to the quality and refinement of our small panel. Although it measures merely 25 x 18 cm, it is painted with incredible finesse and attention to detail. Inscribed both with 'IOANNES MALBODIVS PINGEBAET' and the year of the original's execution, '1527', this panel is the likeliest candidate of them all to be a workshop version of the Budapest original.
